100482_721Dear Maggie Grace,

I was very saddened to hear that you may not be able to attend LOST’s going away party, AKA the final season.  I’ll admit, I wasn’t a big Shannon fan in the beginning -  I was a bit skeptical of the attempts to bring depth to her character at first, but eventually – through great writing and great acting – I came to regard Shannon as a permanent fixture in the LOST ensemble. By the time of her death in “Abandoned,” her various hues had combined into one of LOST’s most complex characters.

Along her journey, Shannon’s redemption cried out for us to reexamine her past – both on the island and off.  I remember watching Abandoned and being totally dumbstruck by the fact that I actually understood why Shannon had become so self centered, and at the same time why she also seemed to be possessed by an inner need to do the right thing.  Whether it was the result of a trick of sly writing, or an artistic act of faith by all involved – it worked.  I was completely saddened to see Shannon go.

I guess the gist of what I’m saying is this:  Shannon is one of the most complete characters on LOST.  Probably because her story was told in a finite space.  Yet, even though we did not get to see Shannon listen to some records in the hatch, or get kidnapped by the others, or time flash, her story is a compelling part of the LOST story because – distilled to its purest form – LOST is a story about the journey characters take along the way to redemption.

Personally, I want to see what would have happened to Shannon if she had never landed on the island.  I want to believe that the damaged young lady with all of her suppressed artistic potential would have healed with or without need of her french translation skills.  Where would Shannon have wound up without the existential shock of surviving a plane crash?  Would she have continued playing the spoiled rich girl whose selfish nature is driven by a sense of loss and oppression, or would she have found herself again?

I realize you are busy with your film career, congrats on that, but please know that to your LOST fans – this one at least – appearing the final season would not merely be a ‘gimmic.’  Damon, Carlton, and the rest know that the only way to pay us off is by revisiting characters in a way that pays tribute to them.  I would not go as far as to assume you ‘need’ this role in a sense of artistic challenge, venue, or paycheck, but I can tell you with absolute certainty that your appearance would make your fans in the LOST community very, very happy.  Besides, I hear the weather in Hawaii is great.

Best,

Doc

Maggie Grace IS coming back, it was reported a couple days ago. Damon and Carlton said that the only person they can’t get back is someone who was never a series regular. So that means the person not coming back is definitely not Maggie Grace.

I read on the tail section website that Shannon was coming back. If that wasn’t true then i’m going to be really sad. Shannon was my favourite character in lost. If Maggie Grace reads this PLEASE COME BACK TO LOST :)

Unfortunately, in terms of credibility, relevance and quality, TheTailSection is a mere fraction of a shade of a shadow of a hint of what it once was when Doc was there, so I would take anything posted there with a grain of salt. Until you see it posted here or some other Lost site that actually matters, I wouldn’t assume anything.

  3. Kris says:

Thanks Doc…. Well said. Maggie I hope you read this.

  4. Ryanlost says:

By the way, is Maggie Grace supposed to read this letter??

Ditto, Doc. I always get a thrill when Boone and Shannon come back to Lost. I’ll be very disappointed if she does not come back. Shannon’s character was difficult to like, but Maggie played her well and she eventually won me over.

TV Guide magazine is where it was reported that Maggie Grace is indeed returning to Lost. Check it:

Tvguide also reported that Rebecca Mader is coming back in their latest issue as well. It will be fun to see everyone back for the final season.

I have a feeling we’ll be going in the opposite direction this season… helping the characters come to terms with the fact that the Island was better for them than the real world. So I’m doubting that if we see Shannon back, a happier existence would have waited for her in L.A.

That said, I really hope we see Shannon/Maggie again in some form!

  9. Jack's Sidekick says:

IMDB lists her and Boone as being cast in the premier, “LA X.”

  10. Ryanlost says:

There’s no point of Boone coming back without Shannon.

  11. Kevin says:

How could she be anyone in existence’s favourite character perplexes me.

    • Kevin says:

I was going for rhetoric there. How she could*

    • MerlboroMan says:

She was a fun character to “hate.” I mean, it was great watching Shannon and Sawyer clash. I think Doc has the best idea for the return of the character. What if she didn’t make it to the island? Would she have been redeemed? I don’t think every character is going to find redemption. Some are going to get “smoked” against a tree.

  12. Ryanlost says:

She was my favourite charcter until stupid ana lucia killed her.

  13. clueless1der says:

Awww, That’s very well said as usual Doc. I would love for her to come back. Reading that made me remember how completely random (and I say that word lightly with this lot lol) her death seemed at the time. Shannon’s death seemed to serve as a plot point for me to completely loathe Ana-Lucia even more.

I would love to see her come back though….

    That, and she’s got a GREAT a**!

    Well she does…
