Diana Spencer was born into the Spencer family, a prominent British aristocratic family with long-standing ties to the Royal family. She was born in Park House, Sandringham, Norfolk, England in 1961. Lady Diana was born with noble ancestors. Her father was Viscount Althorp John Spencer, and her mother was the Honourable Frances Roche.

Charles and Diana’s marriage was had news of fighting and adultery. On August 28, 1996, the couple separated. Charles paid Diana a divorce settlement of $24 million. Diana continued to reside at Kensington Palace after her divorce and began an affair with physician Hasnat Khan before dating Dodi Fayed.

Lady Diana was murdered in a vehicle accident in Paris’ Pont de l’Alma tunnel on August 31, 1997, just over a year after her divorce. Fayed and the car’s driver, Henri Paul, were killed as well. A French inquiry determined that Paul was drunk at the time of the incident, but a British inquest stated that he was driving recklessly with media hard on his tail. On September 6, 1997, Lady Diana was put to rest. As a tribute to the late Princess, Elton John famously performed “Candle in the Wind.” She has been remembered fondly after her death, with “TIME” Magazine calling her one of the most influential individuals of the twentieth century. In a BBC survey in 2002, she was named third among the 100 Greatest Britons, far ahead of the Queen.
