Luca di Montezemolo Fiat and Ferrari
Montezemolo began his career in a Giannini Fiat 500 with his pal Cristiano Rattazzi. Later in his career, he drove for the Lancia rally squad HF Squadra Corse. Montezemolo then joined the automobile corporation Fiat, headquartered in Torino, Italy. Following that, in 1973, he joined the premium automaker Ferrari as an assistant to racer and entrepreneur Enzo Ferrari. The next year, Montezemolo was named manager of Ferrari’s racing branch, Scuderia. Scuderia won the Formula One World Drivers’ Championship with racer Niki Lauda in both 1975 and 1977 when he was in that position. Montezemolo was later appointed to head of Fiat’s racing operations, and subsequently to Fiat’s senior management.
In the 1980s, Montezemolo held a number of positions at Fiat companies, including managing director of the Cinzano vermouth brand and director of the Itedi publishing firm. He also oversaw the yacht racing team Azzurra, the first Italian sailing club to compete in the America’s Cup, and was the manager of the FIFA World Cup organising committee in 1990. Montezemolo was appointed president of Ferrari in the early 1990s, after the company had struggled since Enzo’s death in 1988.
As president, he declared it his goal to win the Formula One World Championship once more. Montezemolo hired Formula One winner Lauda as a consultant and elevated Claudio Lombardi to team manager in the hopes of completing this accomplishment. His efforts were rewarded when Ferrari won the Constructors’ Championship in 1999 and the World Drivers’ Championship in 2000.

Montezemolo co-founded and became the chairperson of Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori, an Italian open-access high-speed train firm, in 2006. NTV, Europe’s first privately-owned, open-access high-speed rail operator, began operations in 2012. Montezemolo founded the liberal-centrist think group Future Italy in 2009, among other things. In 2013, he utilised the think tank to back incumbent Prime Minister Mario Monti in the general election. Future Italy played a key role in the formation of Monti’s Civic Choice party. Montezemolo was appointed non-executive chairman of Alitalia in 2014 and committee president of Rome’s bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics the following year.
