John Kerry Early Life

John Kerry was born on 11th December, 1943, in Aurora, Colorado.  Richard John Kerry and Rosemary Forbes had four children, with him being the second. With his father’s military career, the Kerry family travelled around a lot until he was dismissed from the Army Air Corps. Kerry grew up in Groton (Massachusetts) and Millis (Massachusetts) before relocating to Washington, D.C. This is when John Kerry’s father accepted a position in the Department of the Navy’s Office of General Counsel and later became a diplomat in the State Department’s Bureau of United Nations Affairs.

Kerry’s affluent great-aunt paid his tuition to attend a prestigious Swiss boarding school. Kerry attended Yale University and majored in political science. As the Vietnam War progressed in March 1965, Kerry received the renowned Ten Eyck medal as the best orator in the junior class for a speech critical of US foreign policy. He studied with Rollin G. Osterweis, a speech coach, and won multiple college debates around the country. Kerry graduated in 1966 with average grades.

Kerry joined the Naval Reserve in 1966 and performed an abbreviated four-month tour of duty in South Vietnam as officer-in-charge (OIC) of a Swift Boat from 1968 to 1969. This duty resulted in him receiving battle decorations such as the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and three Purple Hearts. Following that, he joined Vietnam Veterans Against the War, where he became a nationally renowned advocate and outspoken opponent of the Vietnam War. 

He began working as an Assistant District Attorney and co-founded a private practise after receiving his J.D. from Boston College Law School. From 1983 to 1985, John Kerry served as Massachusetts Lieutenant Governor under Michael Dukakis. This is when he worked on an early precursor to the national Clean Air Act. After winning a close Democratic primary for the United States Senate in 1984, Kerry was sworn in the following January. He was a United States Senator from Massachusetts from 1985 to 2013, and he was the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee from 1987 to 1989, when he oversaw a series of hearings.

John Kerry ran in the 2004 presidential election as the Democratic Party’s nominee, but he was defeated by incumbent George W. Bush. On January 29, 2013, when President Barack Obama nominated Kerry to succeed Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State, the US Senate approved him by a vote of 94-3. John Kerry took office on February 1, 2013. As Secretary of State, Kerry began Israeli-Palestinian peace talks in 2013 and secured key accords to limit Iran’s nuclear programme. He launched the Joint Plan of Action in 2013, and the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action in 2015. In 2016, John Kerry signed the Paris Climate Agreement on behalf of the United States.

Kerry was Secretary of State from January 2009 to the conclusion of the Obama administration in January 2017. He later withdrew from federal employment, but remained involved in public affairs as a critic of President Donald Trump and a supporter of President-elect Joe Biden. He did not attend Trump’s inauguration in 2017, although he did join the Women’s March in Washington, D.C. the next day. In September 2018, he released “Every Day is Extra,” his autobiography documenting his life and career in government. 

John Kerry Personal Life

Kerry married Julia Thorne in 1970, and the couple bore two children, Alexandra and Vanessa Kerry. Alexandra was born only a few days before Kerry started law school. Julia filed for divorce from John in 1982, while suffering from acute depression, but the process took until 1997, when the marriage was finally terminated. Thorne backed Kerry’s presidential campaign in 2004 and died of cancer in April 2006. In May 1995, Kerry married Teresa Heinz.

He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2003 and successfully treated. Kerry was flown to Boston’s General Hospital after breaking his right leg in a bicycle accident near Scionzier, France, in May 2015.
