The Clintons were theoretically millions of dollars in debt when they departed the White House due to Bill’s legal expenses and sexual harassment settlement payments. Bill and Hillary would make more than $250 million through speaking engagements, book advances/royalties, consultancy engagements, and investment income in the decades following leaving the White House.

Bill Clinton never made more than $35,000 per year as Attorney General and Governor of Arkansas before becoming President. Hillary was the breadwinner at the time, earning roughly $110,000 in base income as a partner at a Little Rock law firm. Before entering the White House in the late 1980s and early 1990s, she regularly earned roughly $60,000 per year from company board fees, for a total salary of around $180,000.

Hillary’s income dropped to nil during Bill’s first few years in office, while he received roughly $200,000 in base Presidential pay. Their income increased to $1 million in 1996 as a result of royalties from the publication of Hillary’s book “It Takes A Village.” She would eventually make tens of millions of dollars in royalties and advances from her other best-selling books, “Living History”, “Hard Choices”, and “What Happened”.

Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton was born on October 26, 1947, in Chicago, Illinois. She is the eldest of three children. She was a member of the student council and the school newspaper in high school, and she was elected to the National Honor Society. During her junior year of high school, she was voted class vice president. 

Clinton then attended at Wellesley College in Massachusetts as a political science major. She graduated with departmental honours in 1969 and went on to Yale Law School, where she served on the editorial board of the Yale Review of Law and Social Action. She graduated from law school in 1973.

Clinton became Arkansas’s first lady in January 1979, following Bill Clinton’s election as governor. She maintained the position for 12 years (from 1979 to 1981, and then again from 1983 to 1992). Clinton was designated head of the Rural Health Advisory Committee by Bill Clinton, and in that capacity, she won federal monies to expand medical facilities in Arkansas’s most destitute communities without hurting physicians’ fees.

Clinton was also the first woman to be made a full partner at the Little Rock-based Rose Law Firm in 1979. When Bill Clinton was considering not running for governor again in 1990, Clinton considered running herself. He ultimately chose to run and was re-elected to his final term.

Clinton was sworn in as the first lady of the United States in January 1993. She defied several traditions established by previous first ladies, such as being the first to hold a postgraduate degree and her own professional career prior to joining the White House. In addition to the traditional first lady offices in the East Wing, Hillary Clinton was the first president’s wife to have an office in the West Wing.
