In 1997, he had his first commercial success with a song called “Blue Fear.” Two years later, the summer in Ibiza, Spain saw the success of his song “Communicator.” The song gained popularity in the UK as well, where it peaked at No. 18 on the UK Singles Chart in 2000.
Van Buuren founded his label, Armind, in 1999 in partnership with United Recordings. He started his own compilation series in 2000, mixing vocal trance and progression house music. He worked with Tiesto and Ferry Corsten on his well-received debut album, “A State of Trance.” His collaboration with Corsten, “out of the Blue,” was certified Gold.
His second album, titled “Basic Instinct,” was released in 2000. The song “Perpetuous Dreamer” from this album eventually peaked at No. 1 on the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. In 2001, he put out his third album, “In Motion,” and in 2002, he put out his fourth, “Transparence.” He travelled the world in 2002 and 2003 with DJ Seth Alan Fannin, performing for crowds of 20,000 fans in addition to his own concerts in the US and Ibiza, Spain. “DJ Mag” had ranked van Buuren as the fifth best DJ in the world by October 2002.
Van Buuren’s fame was largely a result of his music, but it was also a result of his well-liked radio show. Van Buuren launched his own radio programme on ID&T Radio in March of 2001. The two-hour programme, titled “A State of Trance,” debuted on a weekly basis. The newest trance tracks were played. Van Buuren moved the programme to Fresh FM and then to SLAM!FM in 2004. Radio 538, XM Satellite Radio, and DI.FM continue to broadcast the programme.
Van Buuren released his first studio album, “76,” in 2002 to mark the 100th episode of “A State of Trance.” This album had 13 tracks and lasted 76 minutes. Van Buuren released his second studio album, “Shivers,” a few years later, in 2005. Numerous artists, including Nadia Ali, Justine Suissa, and Gabriel & Dresden, collaborated on this album. In the following year, 2006, “DJ Mag” ranked him as the world’s second-best DJ.
Van Buuren was named the best DJ in the world in 2007 by “DJ Mag.” He received the “Buma Cultuur Pop Award,” the highest honour in Dutch music, in January 2008. He released “Imagine,” his third studio album, in the same year. On the Dutch Albums Chart, the album debuted at number one. A music video for “In and Out of Love,” one of the singles from the album, has amassed over 240 million views on YouTube. Once again, “DJ Mag” named him the top DJ thanks to his success in 2008.
He received the Golden Harp award in 2010 in recognition of his contribution to Dutch music. He also performed at five shows with various artists in Europe and North America to mark the 450th performance of “A State of Trance.” In September 2010, he released “Mirage,” his fourth studio album. He received the Golden Gnomes’ Most Popular International DJ Award in October.
Every significant anniversary of “A State of Trance” has been continued by Van Buuren, who usually performs at sizable events or festivals.
