Alexi Lalas Early Life

On June 1, 1970, Panayotis Alexander “Alexi” Lalas was born in Birmingham, Michigan, to an American mother and a Greek father. The national observatory of Greece’s director, Demetrios Lalas, and poet Anne Harding Woodworth were both present. Despite not becoming interested in soccer until he was 11 years old, Alexi attended Cranbrook Kingswood School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, where he was named the 1987 Michigan High School Player of the Year in his senior year. He was also a member of the high school hockey team and its captain.

Alexi Lalas went on to Rutgers University and played on the men’s soccer team from 1988 to 1991. In 1989 and 1990, the Scarlet Knights advanced to the NCAA Final Four and the National Championship game, respectively. In 1989 and 1990, Lalas was selected to the third team of All-Americans. And in 1991, he was named a first-team All-American and selected for the Hermann Trophy and Missouri Athletic Club Player of the Year. In spite of wanting to finish his degree, he left Rutgers in 1991 to play for the United States national team. In the future, he would pick up his studies again, thanks to online courses, and graduate in 2014 with a bachelor’s degree in English and a minor in music.

After the 1992 Summer Olympics, Lalas trained with former Arsenal player Bob McNab in California, where he struggled to make the first team. He had a few training sessions with the Reserve team before being released, and he returned home from London to consider his soccer future. Then coach Bora Milutinovic invited him to tryouts in the United States.

Alexi Lalas, who had a distinctive long beard and long hair, stood out as a top player in the 1994 FIFA World Cup. On the field, he was known for his physical ability and never-ending endurance. Following the 1994 World Cup, he became the first American to play in Italy’s Serie A as a member of the Calcio Padova. In 1996, he was a member of the New England Revolution team in the newly formed Major League Soccer (MLS) League. He went on to play for a number of MLS teams, including the MetroStars and the Kansas City Wizards, but his most successful period in the league was with the Los Angeles Galaxy, where he won the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup, the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, and the MLS Cup. In 2002, he announced his retirement from the sport. In 2006, Alexi Lalas was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame.

Alexi Lalas held executive positions with the San Jose Earthquakes, the New York Red Bulls, and the Los Angeles Galaxy shortly after he retired. He and Bob Ley served as the network’s Rio de Janeiro studio anchors for ESPN’s 2014 World Cup coverage. Lalas has also worked as an analyst for ABC Sports and Fox Sports.

Lalas, a huge fan of rock music, was a member of the group The Gypsies, which opened for Hootie & the Blowfish at a few of their European shows in 1998. Additionally, throughout his musical career, Alexi Lalas put out seven solo albums.

Alexi Lalas is married and has two children. Greg, his younger brother, left the soccer field after a successful career to take the position of Chief Marketing Officer at United Soccer League. Lalas is fluent in Spanish and Italian in addition to his native languages of English and Greek.
