Weekly Lost Countdown

By Jeremiah Dollins

Razzle-freakin'-dazzle! I was excited when DocArtz asked me to contribute to this wonderful site. Finally, I can inflict my obsession with Lost on an audience who's probably as obsessed as I am. Dude...

In the style of Casey Kasem, here are my "Top of the Pops" Top-Ten moments of the week!

In at number ten...

Miles enjoys watching Claire breast-feed Aaron. No doubt it's been awhile for the ghost-whisperer. Unfortunately, the ghost world doesn't offer many tangible fleshly delights - and certainly none as sweet as Claire.

Coming in at number nine...

Jack and Kate in the shower. Talk about steamy moments. At first I thought it had to be Kate because of the Micro-Machines Millennium Falcon Jack tripped over in the kitchen--but then when she spoke it sounded just like Juliet. Boy was I surprised! We've come a long way from Mr. Friendly expressing no interest in a naked Kate.

At number eight...

Sawyer's restraining order. Since killing his namesake, Sawyer has become the knight in shining armor we always knew he had hiding beneath scoundrel faƧade. Now he's laying down the law with Miles, who's been on the beating end of the stick pretty much since he opened his mouth.

At number seven...

Bedtime stories. Isn't Alice in Wonderland a little challenging for such a young child? Well, I guess I can't throw stones--I used to read Animal Farm to my son (I mean, it's just a neat little fable about animals right?). Nonetheless, this was a very good character moment for Jack, not just because it revealed a positive connection to his father, but the reading selection effectively revealed the truth about Jack and most of our survivors--they are not sure who they are anymore.

Climbing to number six...

Bernard the anesthesiologist. I practically cheered when Bernard finally smothered Jack with chloroform--it was about time someone finally put Jack in his place.

Steady at number five...

Kate's promise to Sawyer. Whatever the promise is, it seems the romantic triangle is going to influence events off the island, too. Kate insists that it's nothing--she loves Jack--but Jack can't trust her enough to believe it. Maybe he has good reason. It's not like Kate has a great track record with her previous relationships.

Taking a break from the countdown...

Isn't it interesting how each of the Oceanic Six has become the bizzaro-version of their island selves. Sayid became the killer he vowed never to become. Hurley returns to bedlam. Sun becomes insanely devoted to her husband. Kate becomes tied down with a domestic life. And Jack turns out to be just like his dad--a substance abusing shell of the man he once was.

Rising in to the number four position...

Juliet's kiss-and-tell. I guess when Jack wouldn't trust her appendectomy skills, Juliet realized a relationship with him would never work. So, she does the right thing--she passes him back to Kate by telling her about the secret kiss at the Tempest. "I'm pretty sure he was trying to prove something," Juliet explains. What exactly was he trying to prove? "That he doesn't love someone else."

Someone else = Kate.

Number three with a bullet...

Hurley's theory. "We're dead...all of us. All the Oceanic Six--we're all dead. We never got off that island." Naomi planted this idea in his mind back in season three. Now that he has seen ghost Charlie, Hurley confuses the island's messenger boy with a symbol for purgatory. Maybe it has to do with his Catholic roots. Future Hurley has gotten to the point where death must seem like a great reward to him. Man, Jacob's cabin must have really messed him up.

At number two...

Rose's question. Why is Jack getting sick now? Just the right person to ask this question, since she...like...you know...was cured of cancer. What's weird is that Rose hasn't been seen much this season (her better half has shined much brighter), but when she's on screen she has provided us with a lot of good water cooler fodder. Who can forget her advice to Claire about how to reward Charlie when he returned from the Looking Glass? And she was the first to throw stones at Locke when presented with the idea of going with his camp. Now, she's questioning the island's intentions. Rose is batting a thousand this season. Way to go, Rose!

And, coming in at number one, it's...

Ghost daddy! First we see Christian Shephard in Jacob's cabin. Now we've got Jack seeing him in the future (while checking a smoke alarm, no less). And, as if that weren't enough, Claire wakes up in the middle of the night to find ghost daddy rocking little Aaron to sleep. About the only thing he wasn't doing was reading Alice in Wonderland. What an amazing WTF moment! If anyone says they expected it, they're lying. What might be even more shocking is that Claire went with her dad into the jungle, leaving Aaron behind. Sawyer's blood-curdling cry for Claire to end the episode ranks right up there with some of the best Lost moments.

So, be back next week for another edition of the Lost Countdown!

I'm totally onboard with the Claire is dead theory. One question though: do ghost mama's continue to produce breast milk?

Gotta part company with the "Claire is dead" camp (which is rapidly becoming the "Paul is dead" of the Lostiverse...). Is it really any harder to believe that the Island helped Claire survive the RPG than it is to believe that Sawyer survived the barrage of bullets with only poles and barbecues for cover, or that the Island could stop an otherwise-functional gun from going off in Michael's apartment 1/3 of the way around the world?

Don't get me wrong...Claire's on her way down the rabbit-hole as well. She's just alive (for now) while en route with Ghost Dad™. ;-)

@Jeremiah

Oh yeah! Welcome...nice gimmick on the post. Wish I'd thought of that...I even listened to good ol' Casey Kasem and the American Top 40 when my dad (and therefore the family) was stationed in Italy back in the early '80s. Ahh, nostalgia.

Good observations! I thought the same thing about the woman in the shower. Upon seeing the Falcon I thought it was Kate, but the voice didn't sound like her, and then it really was Kate! Talk about a fake out. I really really love your description of thier off island selves, they really have become what they didn't want to be.
