Well, that’s the easy explanation. There is a whole lot of scientific mumbo-jumbo behind how islands and continents formed. The island is probably a lot younger than the earth itself. But that’s exactly what Darlton want to avoid. They showed us what’s relevant to the story of our main characters. Everything else we got in this episode was a bonus.

Actually, at the time of viewing the episode, I equated the creation of Smokey to the big bang. Not to say they are the same thing or even similar but in mind, I was thinking : “how do those 2 events relate?”. Darlton’s point being, they show you the light and of course you want to know what is. Once you know what it is, you want to know it formed. How it got there. Similarly, they showed us that “Mother” was protecting the island, you could ask : “well, who was there before her?”. And before you know it, you have to go so far back in the history of the island itself, maybe even to the moment it was created, to answer such questions.

I really don’t see how they can equate the creation of the universe and all the mysteries surrounding it, with the story they’ve created. Just to clarify, this a show on ABC, nothing near the unknown nature and mysteries that the creation of the life itself has.

This is a story with a beginning and an end. Something that any writer has been able to create and end with success. Something that any writer that has introduced concepts or mysteries, has had the ability to explain in the end. J.K. Rowling didn’t hide behind the concept that her story had gotten too big, or that people had looked too deep into her story. The only complaint Harry Potter fans have at the end of seven novels is why did Crookshanks help Sirius Black? She really knew how to create and then finish a story with many, many threads.

Mad respect for Cuse and Lindelof, but c’mon, hiding behind the logic of the big bang theory and the creation of life is either an attempt at humor or just hubris and/or lack of story telling ability on their part. Lame.
