I am looking for a professional sports handicapper and can't make up my mind. There are so many services to choose from. Cameron, I know you want/wanted “Castaway: The TV Series” and I think a vast majority of the people who bailed out along the way did too! I think we’re still going to see The Black Rock again and Danielle’s crew as well. I want the show to be more science-oriented (NOT sci-fi) and cover the roots of The DHARMA Initiative instead of the nonsense with Jate and Skate and “Why Oh Why Is [Insert Character Here] So Messed UP?????” kinds of things. The cool thing about LOST for me is that I can ignore the romance and emotional stuff and there’s still plenty for me left.

Good ideas. What you seem to be alluding to is the idea of “The Greater Good” which I think has been episode title of both “Heroes” and “Lost.” Some collateral damage is necessary for all to survive. What will the Island demand?

I miss LOST when we all thought it was just a plane crash with some wierd tribal others, and roussaus’s transmission was just an initial scare tactic to reel viewers in, i thought it would end seaseon 3 back then… But Now Time Travel!!! I still wanna know about the black rock and scientist crew… infact i just wanted cast-away the tv series…

I feel your pain, bro! But the only thing worse than having to wait for answers, is getting them all at once and then having nothing left to look forward to. It’s the difference between knowing you have a piece of chocolate cake in the fridge waiting for you, or just finishing it and feeling kind of down that there’s none left!

Thanks Brent. I’m getting the sense that something really catastrophic is slated to occur in the Lost world, and either Ben or Widmore thinks it’s possible to change it while the other does not, or, actually wants it to occur for some reason. While this direction may be interesting, I feel that it was kind of explored on the first season of Heroes–with one group trying to avoid the destruction of NYC, and the other wanting it to occur. Hopefully, Lost has a different picture in mind. Faraday hints at being able to change some things, or using Desmond to do so. Perhaps there are two alternate timelines and the island is the key to which mankind experiences.

Glad you liked it! Darlton claimed that the skeletons will prove that they knew what they were doing from the beginning. I’ve also suspected, and heard others says as well, that the series may end with Jack time/space traveling like Ben, and ending up on his back in the middle of some mysterious island. As we pull back, we realize this is how the series began. Like James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake, the story will end as it had begun!

Hahahaha, I cursed my TV when Richard said “I wish I had time to explain it, John. But you’re gonna be moving on soon, and we need to go over a couple of things before you do”. I hate that stalling tactic, it’s one of the worst features of the show for me.

Great post, Marc. I like to think of LOST’s time travel as the very action you do to prevent something from happening causes that thing to happen. That goes back to Greek myths. There are small perturbations from the path, but the path is clear.

But all this talk about “There are RULES!!” means only one thing and that is best summed up by Chekhov’s Gun. If you put a gun on the stage in act one, the gun must be fired in act 3. If you tell everyone over and over and over again that the rules can’t be broken, you can bet the farm that the rules will be broken at some point. The loop will be broken.

Great post on time travel – and good memory with Bill & Ted. Due to the breadth of Lost, the writers clearly took the right approach to time travel storytelling. And whether planned from the start or not, they’ve had the advantage of 4 seasons of using the flashback/flashforward method to prime the audience; another advantage to their approach.

BIG themes make for a classic sci-fi tale – good/evil, faith/science, destiny/choice – ie, LOTR, Star Wars, etc.
