I think the Others are a mirror image of Jack and the Lost survivors. Look at them: eyeliner dude is Jack (wasn't he working on Locke's leg in the last ep...like a doctor?). Look at all the Others -- there are versions of them that are Sun, Jin and Sawyer and all the rest.

Time travel and some sort of mirror universe thing, that's what I'm going for.

It seems to me that the O6 + Locke are the Island's constant (Or at least some of them are). The island won't stop jumping till they return. As far as the Island disappearing though, think back to "The Constant". When Desmond became dislocated in time only his conciousness was jumping. On top of that, it was his past conciousness that was doing the jumping. While this was happening the future Desmond's conciousness was gone. Maybe that's how it works for the Island when the same thing happens on the physical plane. The Island still physically exists (just like Desmond's body when his conciousness returned to the past) but to the outside observer nobody's home. That doesn't make things easy if you are trying to find your way back and you are now one of those outside observers. Maybe that's why they need Mrs Hawking and that Dharma Station she was working in. She appears to be the key to pinpointing where and when they can find the island in order to return. However, there appears to be a limited window of opportunity to do so before it becomes immpossible to get back.

From the first two episodes it seems that they need to come back to stop those instable time jumps, like the island would then calm down and rest in time again or something. A 'scientific reason', as Michael Emerson said. I think it's not necessarily destiny or fulfillment at this point.

This one makes the most sense to me:

Why would they need to go back?

When the island shifted into a new narrative, it was fulfilling its place in the timeline. It was meant to go to this other narrative, but the 6 were supposed to come with it. Without the 6 to put certain events into motion, the timeline becomes out of control trying to correct itself and causes some terrible things to happen. The return of the 6 will allow the timeline to correct itself, well, correctly.

I believe the island disappeared because whatever happened there causes the ultimate destruction of it. As a result, it is erased from the map. The Oceanic Six have to go back to make things right. The only problem with this theory is that Darlton have made it clear that future events can't be altered (course-correction). So, of course, that makes the movement of the island still a mystery.

It may be possible that in this new place that the alternate version of the Oceanic 6 have perished, and do not exist in any form.

You may be onto something though, the four toed statue could be the result of the island originating from another reality and had been moved to (for lack of a better term) the Flight 815-verse in the years proceeding the Dharma Initiative.

- If the island went back in time, why would it become invisible?

If the island is in a closed timelike curve, it would stop existing at that point (the time that it moved) and "restart" at the time when the path was created.

- Wouldn’t the island still exist in the same spot for many years in the past?

I think the island has been in the same spot for at least as long as the Dharma Initiative has been there. We have no idea how long it has been since the last time the island moved.

- Maybe the island has always been moving all along. Does the island float? How far down could it go with out being connected to the Earth somewhere?

I would assume the island has not been floating, because if the island was constantly moving around would there be any reason for Ben to move it?

- Did the Looking Glass get moved as well? It wasn’t on the island but it was connected and it was close.

See Darth's comment :)

I would have to think the Looking Glass moved, if not only because the Hydra Island moved as well.

I'm not sure if it's a good thing or not that I'm putting so much thought into this, but if it is indeed a "rift in time" that the O6 need to fix, then do you think they would have problems with running into various versions of themselves on/off island? The relics found there (Black Rock, Statue, etc) would seem to lend themselves to that theory. :)

I really like the idea of seeing Kelvin again and Radzinsky. I still wonder what they really knew about the Others. Did Ben and the Others leave the Dharma people in the Swan alone so they wouldn't have to press the button? I hope we get to see the real Henry Gale parachute onto the island.

Yes I do agree with this. I totally agree that the swan is back as well. I recall a very early screen cap from season 5 were we a shot of Fairaday held up at gun point by an man in a yellow hazmat suit outside what appears to be the swan.

I think that the island has went back in time as one of the sneek peaks shows Eko's plane crashing the one with his brother in it. My guess is that the hatch will be there with Radzinski and Kelvin Inman in it. We might get to then see Rousseau's story and the famous hostiles.
