This is very interesting data. You have managed to make this very sensible. I like how you make your points in such a different way.

I completely agree with you Andy. I felt Season 5 was missing the something special that LOST usually has... IMO it was the character development. One of the things that threw me the most was how Season 5 skipped over all the little character moments that made this show so great in the previous seasons.

Like I would have loved to see Penny and Desmond's reactions to finding out they're going to become parents (instead of just skipping straight to Penny having the baby), or seeing more about how the Oceanic 6 lived back in the real world (instead of just skipping straight to them trying to get back to the island, which IMO happened much to quickly felt VERY rushed and relied to much on coincidence). The plot of Season 5 felt like it had big holes missing and the little character development we did get was very strange (like Jacks motive for wanting to blow-up the bomb).

Season 4 is my personal favorite as the writers perfectly balanced the character development with the overall story in a way that felt real and made sense while also steaming ahead at a fast pace. It also contains my 3 favorite episodes! (The Constant, The Shape of Things to Come and There's No Place Like Home)

I know that we're still 4+ months out and maybe it's because the new television season is around the corner, but seeing the names of some familiar contributors and commentators has got me really excited and feeling that all is right with the world. Nice work as usual Fb. Looking forward to more.

I too agree with this article. I think Fishbiscuit talks a lot of sense. Season One in my opinion is still the best season not to mention near-perfect television. That's not to say the following seasons were not near in quality to Season One because they wern't far behind, make no mistake about that. But I just feel Season One had a much more dangerous and intense feeling that any of the Losties could die at any given time because they were still learning how to survive and anything could happen, and that excited me a lot - Season One also had a altogether better and different tone because they (the Losties) were new to all of it and were still getting to grips of being stuck on an Island... an Island with a Smoke Monster and ghostly apparitions not to mention a crazy bunch called The Others who like to kidnap little kids, mind. Nowadays, the mention of ghosts and monsters doesn't effect the Losties one bit.

By Season Four and onward, the Losties had become Masters of the Jungle and veterans. They're not new to the game anymore like Season One. And because of this, the show has lost a lot of its intensity and danger. Not that I'm blaming Darlton - that's not exactly their fault. I mean it'd be pretty stupid if the Losties were stuck on an Island for months and didn't learn how to survive better. But I think Darlton have noticed this problem also and that's why I believe they are trying to bring Season Six closer to Season One in tone and character-wise. And obviously the other reason is to bring some nostaglia to Season Six and bring the epic story of Lost full-circle.

This is my list of Lost seasons in order of my fave season:

Season 1
Season 5
Season 2
Season 3
Season 4

Hopefully Season 6 will be number one and I've got full confidence it will be the best season of Lost ever if not television.

Before Lost got picked up for a full season, the writers were asked to write only 12 episodes. They decided to write the best 12 episodes while dropping hints and clues that they thought were never gonna be answered. Not until the ratings of the Pilot came that the writers decided to fully expand the mythology of the show. I believe that the first 12 episodes of Season 1 hold many clues to the overall mythology (adam & eve, Rousseau's 'sickness', backgammon, charlie's guitar, etc)

Yes, but this all misses the real point: Who's hotter, Juliet or Kate?

(Sorry, I couldn't resist.)

I, too, don't agree that season one was where all the important stuff happened. I think seasons 2-4 were incredibly vital, and had some of the most amazing moments in the series history. Season 5, I felt, was rather disappointing, but it still held some very powerful chapters in the series.

although i understand what fish is sayin and to a large extent agree with her as far as season ones importance. I will stand by my long standing opinion that the most important moment in lost history is the opening to season two. When watching that scene immediately after watching season five as desmond looks through the mirrors and up the hatch to see jack and locke standing there, it really ties things together. I guess that can be argued to be season one also in away since its the very next scene, but i still think that is the most pivitoal moment in the shows history everything that happens happens because they go down into that hatch.

i know this really has nothing to do with anything, but i really just felt like saying it.

I can't say I appreciate the tone of the entry. There were plenty of great twists, interesting character revelations, and WTF moments in Seasons 2-5. I love that the show may be going full circle, but I have also loved every season of Lost.

Maybe on a re-watch of your own you will too.
