I think the question “What lies in the shadow of the statue” is some kind of code to determine who is working for Widmore. I think most of the people who crashed were working for Widmore, including Caesar and that they were waiting for their chance to take over. It’s like that question Desmond asked Locke, “What did one Snowman say to the Other Snowman?”

holy crap! I never realized “Only fools are enslaved by time and space” was an anagram for “Bones of Nadlers may lay lost deep in cave”!

That is surely too much of a coincidence.
