Even tho I have never been high on Jacko.... i would be open to this for one reason... this entire series started with Jack... Whether I like it or not (Matthew Fox's lack of acting ability and his utter inability to control sporadic fits of blinking) Jack is integral... He must be. Between Christian and He walks among but he is not one of us and Locke's goading, Locke's believing and persistance with Jack, his interconnectedness with Sayid he must find his path... And I would accept this.

But I rather like the idea that Desmond is really the protagonist of this adventure, so I'd rather HE be the Variable...

None of you seem to get it. Jack is the variable. He is in 1977 even though he isn't supposed to be. Because of this he is either going to change the outcome of the future, or directly cause "the incident".

I should add that if Hawking was trying to change history by sending Jack back to the Island, the events she hoped to change might have something to do with why she's no longer an Island resident, just as Widmore is no longer there. We now have an idea of why he left, but we've seen nothing about the departure of "Ellie."

Here's a mind-bender: if Jack is not "supposed" to be in 1977, then he (and maybe some of the others who came with him) are changing history. Maybe Mrs. Hawking sent Jack to the island with the idea that he would perform surgery on young Ben, saving him and preventing him from becoming the person he is in 2007. It was her way of trying to change history ... except Jack decided to be a jerk about it and let Ben die, leading to events very similar to those in the original history. Hence, the photo in the recruitment center in 2007 Dharmaville now shows Jack, but Ben is still his same old self.

It depends a bit on whether Sayid was "supposed" to shoot Ben, I suppose. Perhaps Sayid was in 1977 in the original history, but Jack was not.

I still have a feeling that all of this precipitated from Desmond helping the O6 leave the island, which was not in the original timeline. He is the variable, and because of his flashes in Season 3 a lot of things have changed from how they originally happened. So far it's just been subtle.

I miss Desmond too. I do think Faraday is wrong and his mother is right. I don't know if EM is leaving the show or not and I don't care. She has been of no interest in the last 2 seasons. Your Kate hate aside, with all due respect, professor, please educate us on her interesting actions in season 4 and this season? Nothing.

So, lets focus on the show and leave unnecessary sentiments aside and say unless they have a new arc for her, she might as well head to V where she will have a plot. She has barely had a centric in the last 2 seasons. Kate and Sun are more important and far more interesting than she has been this last 2 seasons. She is now just triangle Fodder. Let EM go. So, we can carry on with our original Losties. She has done her best and we thank her. Time to go, Juliet.

Let's play with time a bit. In 1977, Desmond is a child. But he could have been sent a message which led him to somebody / something (Widmore,
DHARMA, etc.). Daniel consolidates his future knowledge of DHARMA with their past incidents ,and figures out he needs to meet with his mother in his past / her future. Together they work out a strategy to send the LOST and Miles (if he survives) and himself into the future via the Incident. Come on, we all know the LOST either used it or instigated it. Their flash through time might have been interpreted as disintegrated At this point the game is up for grabs between Locke, Widmore, and Linus, but he has the bonus weapon. And the LOST have to decide which side is right. Welcome to the final season... battle for control of the Island.

It's a huge possibility given Daniel and Eloise's science background. We only have two people who claim that whatever happened happened. There is good evidence that it is true, but maybe they both lied.

See, there is a good explanation of Daniel's issues. Back between 1974 and 1977 he met his mother. Went to her with a list of truths about his life (while his child form was around). Got a great deal of DHARMA information, as well as his own. Studied time theory. But if he was informed of future events (like Desmond), went into a paradox. He knew about Oceanic 815 because his past self witnessed his future self with Hawking. Perhaps the fate of Charlotte as well. Oceanic 815 might have been a trigger.

Daniel knows about constants, and knows about time variants. He is seemingly going back the Island with more knowledge about time and space. I'm not sure if he's the variable, but I'd bet on it... but it is still a constant... he'll change the fate of the Oceanics, Miles, and Juliet... all the way to when 316 crashed. The Incident.

If we accept that somebody, be it Desmond or the dharma losties or whoever, is variable, what exactly are the parameters that can be changed? Surely changing anything would have infinite knock on effects? If it's just the end result that needs to stay the same, I wonder what makes the result so special. or indeed what defines it? (life or death?) I'm thinking that the end result has to be something so colossal that its cancels out all the other minor changes that timetravellers/variables will undoubtedly have made. Otherwise 'whatever happened happened' loses any real applicability.

What do I think. Well, pretty much the same as prof has written, especially about Daniel, his mom, Elizabeth's role etc. We need Desmond too, I'm sure we'll see him in the hospital next.

What we know about the incident and where people are right now, I just had a thought. People currently in Dharma seem to be real Dharma people and Hostiles in their camp. Is this the time, when the Hostiles/Others get the chance to infiltrate DI? They might be warned, go to their Temple and it gives them shelter during the incident, but DI workers die, possible not all women and children, they manage to evacuate.

Now, to be fair, Sayid was very up front with the Dharma Initiative about being from the future- they just thought it was all the LSD talking.

I wonder if Daniel, now that he has returned, will find his mother/Ellie again? Will she remember him as the weird guy who came into the camp, told her to bury a bomb, then disappeared? Is Daniel's working with the DI an attempt to change the past- surely his grief over Charlotte wouldn't lead him to break his own rules?

My one issue with Eloise being Faraday's mom is that, eventually, when she has her little boy and sees him growing up, she doesn't put the two young bearded men together? Given that her son is studying time travel, she never says boo? That's restraint, I'd be dying to talk about it. But then, they seem to have a frosty relationship.

Maybe the reason Dr. Chang "throws out" his wife and son, as she told Miles on her deathbed, is because telling them he didn't care and wanted them out was the only way he could make them leave the island?

We know the rules don't apply to Desmond for some reason. Daniel has said that they can't change the past. Indeed, attempts to change the past have only led to course-correction. Still, if Desmond is unique, then he may have been conned by Eloise Hawking during The Constant when she realized he was going to make a different decision regarding Penny.

Still, it leaves open a very interesting possibility. If Desmond is outside the rules, then anybody wanting to change the past has to do it by convincing Desmond to do something different.

Many things are explained by Daniel's warning to Chang... much of DHARMA (including women and children) could have been evacuated as a precaution (Lara Chang, Miles, Charlotte). Ben wasn't evacuated because he's off with the Others. As for the main cast... the incident might flash them forward to the crash Survivors of Ajira 316.

Many things are explained by Daniel’s warning to Chang… much of DHARMA (including women and children) could have been evacuated as a precaution (Lara Chang, Miles, Charlotte). Ben wasn’t evacuated because he’s off with the Others. As for the main cast… the incident might flash them forward to the crash Survivors of Ajira 316.
