Now, the more we learn in Season 5, the more I wonder what Season 2 was about.
I really don’t see the link between locked-up fake Henry Gale and Jack’s new best buddy… He wanted to kill them all at that time, and now he’s protecting them…
That’s one of the major discrepancies in the storyline, in my opinion.

Great episode though.

I think Jacob is good and he has been some how captured by Christian/Clair. I wonder if Christian is bad, especially with his inability to help Locke, and I really think that in the end the good/evil aspect will be exposed.

The members of the French team who went inside Smokey’s lair seemed very clear about what the monster was and its purpose, my guess is there was someone or something in there that explained everything to them (possibly Richard, who knows, I don’t think we’re getting any more French team story). Rousseau repeats the same words she heard from Robert when asked about the smoke monster, so I also think that rather than not being communicative she actually does not know anything about the Island. What really bothers me is that Robert tried to kill her, which to me didn’t seem to be self-defense but rather some kind of Other-related evil and deceit.

Now we know why Ben told Locke that whoever turns the wheel can never come back to the island. Locke loves the island and has sabotaged every opportunity to leave. Ben telling Locke that turning the FDW would get him a permanent one way trip off the island forever would definitely keep Locke away from the wheel.

So Ben was lying then, you can come back!

One thing that stuck out to me was how Charlotte, when dying, said to Daniel, “I just remembered something” and then told him about the scary man who told her never to come back. It seemed very similar to how Desmond suddenly remembered Daniel telling him something in the past. But, of course, Daniel was right there when she suddenly remembered it, so I dunno.

It’s entirely possible that John GAVE Ben the ring. Perhaps John wanted to both keep his promise to Jin and do what Christian asked of him, so letting someone else persuade Sun to return to the island was his plan to satisfy both obligations?

Anyone notice how Locke’s right leg is an accident magnet? A piece of the trebuchet got stuck in it when it blew up trying to get into the Swan hatch. The bolt on the blast door in the Swan during lockdown went through his leg. He was shot in the leg by Ethan. And now he broke it during the fall down the well! Am I missing any other right leg incidents? I wonder if he dies from some sort of complication with that leg break?

Could it be that the monster dislikes babies on the Island, specifically, and wants Rousseau dead? (Therefore unborn ones die, too?)

Yeah I agree, I’m pretty sure the monster “brainwashed” them into thinking that they also needed to be a sort of security system for the island, killing anyone who was deemed a threat.

Here is how I see it: The Others appointment of Ben as their leader was a mistake and it is something that I think only Widmore knows. I think Ben cast him off the island somehow. I believe Widmore was in line to be the Others’ leader but somehow Ben ruined it and usurped him.

Ben could never see or hear Jacob. Ben found out that Locke could hear Jacob, something Ben was never able to do and he tried to kill Locke. The Island wouldn’t let Locke die so easily though and Ben realized the only way he could get Locke out of the way was to gain his trust and wait for the opportunity to present itself.

When Jacob had Christian tell Locke to move the Island, Ben probably knew something bad would happen if the wrong person did it. He turned the Donkey Wheel himself to not only leave the island but to cause a scenario that would force Locke to leave.

Far from the island, Ben finds Locke and kills him. Now he wants to return to take his wrongful place back at Jacob’s unwilling side.

Perhaps the whole Charlotte episode gives some insight as to why Daniel was crying when he watched the discovery of the Flight 815 wreckage?

I’m not entirely convinced that Ben is evil. Christian/Jacob told Locke to move the island, not to get rid of Ben along with the move. The island obviously didn’t want to be found by Widmore. I agree Ben always has a plan, but I can’t imagine he thought he was going to be able to get back to the island. Remember his words before he turned the wheel? “I hope you’re happy Jacob” Sounded to me like he thought he was doing what needed to be done to save the island and it wasn’t likely a round-trip.

I don’t think Ben or anyone else on Lost can be classified as good or evil. They all have their own motivations. I do think Ben has fallen out of favor with Jacob / the island, but was once in its good graces.

Also, I will reiterate my opinion that someone has trapped Jacob in some sense.

And yes, I know that Ben is known for lying, but I think most people assumed that he was doing so for the good of the island and that he was helping Locke. His evilness became especially clear when Jacob/Christian told Locke “since when has listening to Ben ever got you anything good?” (or something like that). Ben is very evil. Unless somehow Jacob is evil and Ben is doing a good thing by isolating him (“help me” is the kind of thing the devil might say. Remember that episode of The Twilight Zone where the devil is imprisoned by those very old monks?) Maybe Charles Widmore is good? He does keep helping Desmond…

Great great episode. I think it casts Ben in a WHOLE new light. I’m not sure if anybody else got that feeling, but he has been lying to everyone. He was never supposed to turn the Donkey wheel. He lied to Locke. Then, presumably, he KILLED Locke when he got off the island. At least that’s my theory after watching tonight’s episode. He probably killed him because Locke said he wouldn’t try to get Sun to come back to the island because Jin told him to. He showed Ben the ring, and Ben killed him and took the ring. How else could he have possibly gotten it?

He really is working just for himself. Also, it was great to sorta see Smokey’s lair. I hope somebody gets cracking on those hyroglyphics.

One more thing: I think Daniel, knowing what Charlotte told him, will still tell young Charlotte not to come back to the island, because not doing so would mess up the future. Thus, he will tell her not to come back, knowing full well that she will come back and die. IF HE CHANGES THIS, then bad things will happen. Assuming his rules are correct, however, he can’t change this, and he knows it. Very sad stuff.

I was really hoping that Ms. Hawking would make some remark about seeing Desmond “again.”
