Great article.

Hasn't Daniel already given us the clue to who the variable is? He to whom the rules do not apply? Our favorite Scot and star of The Constant.

Has anyone seen any mention of the changing your own diapers line as a call out to Heroes where Claire did change her own diapers?

I just assumed "the variable" is a throwback to "the constant", especially given Daniel's return.

Well, first of all, 10 points to you for using the word "saccharine." Also, you pointed out exactly WHY I like Marc's articles. "Research." But it goes beyond simply saying this means that. Yeah, he is telling me how I already feel about the show. That's why I like to read movie reviews that I agree with. It's just more satisfying to agree with someone than disagree. But beyond that, I see his analysis as sort of applying philosophy to the show. Or the show to philosophy. Or something like that. He doesn't just say what things mean within the show, or even what they mean in textbooks. He gets to the heart and soul of the show and comments on that. I dunno, I just enjoy it.

But I didn't mean to disparage anyone who puts in time and effort in creating posts for the site. I know it can be a lot of hard work. I was just more impressed when I first started visiting this site because after each episode there would be, maybe, two or three articles about the show by people who clearly knew what they were talking about. The articles were rich and insightful and pointed out things I wouldn't have thought of. Now it seems like anyone with access to a keyboard is writing a recap and posting it, and it's not that some of them are still good, it's just that when you have so many it sort of diminishes the authority of any of them. You know? Eh, I'm just too picky anyway. Especially when it comes to this show. Take everything I say with a grain of salt. Or two.

the article made a few interesting (though kind of easy) connections...research hoth and tie it to the show, research Some Like it Hot and tie it to the show, etc etc. I think what you like about this article is that he's telling you point blank how you already feel about the show, that it's almost mystically deeper that anything you've seen on television.

as for setting a new benchmark and losing respect for everything else that takes on the tough task of actually delving into the minutiae instead of making grand saccharine statments? meh.

Marc, I love your insights. THIS is the type of article I seek out about my favorite show. I only discovered Doc's site this season, but already I've seen it starting to get overwhelmed with recap after recap from this person or that person making some casual observations. Frankly, I've started to lose respect for this site as a credible resource for thought-provoking analysis. But your articles are definitely one of the few exceptions. Penetrating, thoughtful, and well-researched, your articles should be the benchmark that all other critics aspire to. Thanks for the continued excellence.

Hey. I just wanted to say that I think this column is fantastic. Ive long held the idea, that television and movies can be more than just mindless entertainment. Ive long watched shows like Law and Order, LOST, and Star Trek and have learned many things from these programs.

I like the idea that this episode serves as a lesson about the lesson. Its the perfect setup for the beginning of the end, and so far Im extremely excited about where this is leading.
