[...] Of course, it’s also possible that the two timelines are occurring alongside each other. If this is the case, it is likely that these ripples in time will eventually merge once the flash-sideways events of 2004 catch up to 2007. This may cause a continual loop that leads to the Losties (and the world) being stuck in time (similar to the Star Trek TNG episode “Cause and Effect” written about in “‘Follow the Leader’ — Can Changing One Moment Change Everything?”).
Insightful article, thanks! Regarding your "Cause and Effect" Star Trek TNG theory: I've had a feeling ever since the end of season 3 - the part where Naomi is on the beach about to radio the freighter (before Locke knifes her to death) - that we were in some sort of time loop. Or if not a "time loop", then at least that scene was happening for the second time. I'd have to go back and re-watch it to be 100% sure, but there is a part in there where Jack smiles knowingly at Kate, and says something to the effect of "you ready to do this again?", and she winks back (again in a knowing way - as if they've been thru this before). Jack probably doesn't overtly say "again", but you get that "Groundhog Day" feeling that this isn't the first time they've played out this scene, and that this time, they're trying to get it right. Again, I could be totally off base with this, but that scene has always stuck with me, and I'd be tickled if I were right on this.

Perhaps such a discussion would be better off in a forum where others could add to it if they wanted. If you're interested, feel free to start a topic on "The Myth of Lost" Facebook page in the discussion section. Fate (inevitability) vs Freewill would do.

Thanks for removing the tag from your post. No worries.

I agree that chance and inevitability (I avoid supernatural words such as fate and destiny) are NOT mutually exclusive, but are a matter of perspective. However, since the perspective of inevitability is one of a time traveler, and since in the real world, there are no time travelers, I would have to say that free will trumps fate/destiny.

I could go all biblical on this subject by pointing out that God is the only individual that is privy to knowledge of the future, and he created us with free will, thus further indicating that free will trumps destiny, but this is not the place for such a discussion. If you are game, my email address is easy to figure out, as I make constant use of my username in everything and am a huge fan of google.

P.S. I will gladly fix the Donovan post. I didn't know that tag was exclusive. My apologies.

Ecclesiastes 9:11 (King James Version)

"I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all."

I actually agree with that statement. From who's perspective is the chance happening? If whatever happened, happened, but you don't know what happened, then it appears to be chance from your point of view. A programmer knows the way a video game can go, but the video game character doesn't.

I'm guessing that's your point (and please correct me if I missed it) but I actually interpret this passage a bit differently. I think it says that not all good people who work hard will be rewarded even if they deserve to be. That there is an unpredictability to life. Again, I agree. But viewing it from the big picture, I would say that it's already fated as to whether the strong will win that battle or the swift will win a race, but it's all chance to them.

BTW, completely unrelated, but would you mind removing the "Lost in Myth" tag from your last column (the Donovan one)? I use it to put all the "Lost in Myth" columns under one heading. If you click on it, you'll see that they are all there. Feel free to use "Lost Mythos" or "mythology" or whatever else, but that tag was created just for the columns. Thanks.

Great article; thank you! I like your comparison to "Cause and Effect," and I submit another Star Trek TNG show, "Tapestry," which paints a more bleak picture of how a life can change based on one decision. But unlike the characters on LOST, Picard could see how his life was altered by that decision. Jack cannot (yet) see a reality when 815 didn't crash, and I think he must ultimately come to understand the importance of the experiences on the island and over the past 3 years (both joyful and painful, including the deaths of companions).
