----- POSSIBLE SPOILER TO SOME -----

the smoke monster is time as a course corrector, it 'judges' people based on their place in time and if they belong on the island. a further explanation will be based on egyptian references and the islands original inhabitants (egyptians and richard (jacob)).

Hmmmm, very interesting indeed and possibly adding a bit of credence to it - the story was published in 1941 - I could be off here but wasn't that the year Hurley said he was born when asked by Chang in FTL?

Hey, I love that story! First read it 17 years ago, best time travel story ever. Not to mention it is entirely self-consistent.

As for the compass, read the story and pay attention to the part about the dictionary. I think it illustrates it well.

Nah, they screwed the pooch. ;)

hey, listen, I am all for the writers doing their thing and I accept that they may be up to something with that compass, its just not what I would have done. And that's fine too. I would just prefer that they had established that the compass held some importance to Richard in 1955 otherwise its pretty useless as proof that John's from the future.
All the paradoxical things aside, that bothers me more than anything else, and smacks of lazy writing to me.

On another note, I saw Star Trek as IMAX Saturday and all I can say is HOLY CRAP ON A STICK!

I think that you are missing the point, they said it was intentional, and further that it should give some insight into the nature of the show. So, for example, it's not a new idea that they could the cause the flight 815 crash, and of course if they did so, then this would set up the same type of paradox. There are plenty of others once you begin theorizing about who Jacob could be, who Adam and Eve could be, etc. This would not be the first time this paradox has been addressed via narrative, and indeed a few of the books referenced on the show make use of this theme (ditto for the book from which I got my screen name).

There are some interesting possible answers to the idea, however. For instance, say that something happens to the compass (it deteriorates or something) after Locke gives it to Richard, then Richard wouldn't be able to give it to Locke, but Richard still would have had it for a time, but he would never have been able to receive it in the first place if it had deteriorated, etc. Is this a more troublesome paradox than the current one? If so, does this help answer why there is a paradox in the first place? This idea that the universe will allow for a material paradox of this sort in order to avoid a more difficult one has been put forward as a possible answer to the paradox. Perhaps you could come up with another, better one? Perhaps the writers already have?

At any rate, they certainly didn't cop out. Instead, I think it's safe to say that they have done a really nice job of helping to give some extra fodder to the hardcore theorizers without giving away any truly important information.

In my mind, the compass is an allegory for whats going on with Miles, Daniel, Charlotte and maybe more. They're all stuck in loops.

thanks for the link! very interesting...especially given that my pretty new-found love for Lost has started during the last several months since I've essentially been locked in a room finishing my dissertation (like the main character in that book...although my study is not on time travel!).

Thanks for the link k, this went into more detail than the wiki. It certainly tells a familiar tale does'nt it!? especially for me, the part about bob going back 10 years previous to diktor in order to take his position, only to wonder in 10 years time where diktor is, then to click to the fact he is diktor. This may be where we are headed in the finale, Locke has taken the leadership role, and is now wondering more than ever, where is jacob!? and he may soon discover that thru becoming leader and trying to kill jacob, he is currently on the path to becoming jacob! It also points nicely to the "jughead" situation with whatever happened was meant to happen, but im still undecided on which thing will happen! is jughead the incident? or is the electromagnetic event the incident? I'm still undecided because I still think the writer's might put their own spin on things by making the past changeable. Faraday speaking to desmond was changing his past, and I believe desmond is the key to any changes that the losties can make. Long post folks, sorry, but hopefully something to chew on.

yeah, a self-fulfilling prophecy is what I was describing. While looking at the use of paradox in fiction on wikipedia, I came across an article about a short story called 'by his bootstraps' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/By_His_Bootstraps which may have had an influence on lost. If so, this does lean me towards the theory that locke is jacob, despite the reports on the net that....well.. I better stop there as I may be treading into spoiler territory. Ill just say I think what is being reported is a misdirection on the part of damon & carlton.

It's a METAPHOR. Isn't it obvious that they simply went to the mainland, kidnapped Anthony Cooper, brought him back to the island, and put him in that box. He basically admitted it.
