Note that this is not a publication of the website Lostpedia. Here’s a press release describing the product:

LOST Encyclopedia to Be Published by DK

in Fall 2010

New York, NY, March 9, 2010. DK Publishing announced today that the company will publish the first officially licensed encyclopedia to LOST, the hugely successful television series aired on ABC-TV and produced by ABC Studios.  Featuring more than 400 pages and over 1,500 images the LOST Encyclopedia will be a comprehensive guide to the characters, items, locations, plotlines, relationships and mythologies from all six seasons of the landmark series.  Created in full collaboration with ABC Entertainment and ABC Studios, this will be the only fully licensed and comprehensive reference work to all things LOST, and it will include a foreword by executive producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse.

“The LOST Encyclopedia will give readers profound new insights to the people and places that make this one of television’s most-watched and acclaimed programs.  For those new to the show, this unparalleled guide will be a thrilling introduction to the LOST universe, and for devoted fans, it is a dream come true” says David Waybright, Vice President and Publisher.

Mia Rondinella, VP – ABC Entertainment Group and Business Planning Development, says of the book:  “The LOST Encyclopedia will be a comprehensive official guide to the LOST characters, mythologies and timelines that have captivated and enthralled millions of fans over the past six years.  A rich and immersive look at elements of the LOST universe both big and small, we hope that it will serve as the perfect companion to the LOST viewing experience.”  She continued:  “It’s another way of saying thank you to our loyal fans for coming along on this unprecedented journey with us.”

The LOST Encyclopedia is the only official guide to the people, places and mythologies of LOST, which began airing in September 2004 and will conclude its phenomenal six-year run in May of 2010.  DK secured a world language deal and expects to publish localized editions of the book in several territories.

DK Publishing is world renowned for its distinctive, highly visual books that inform, inspire, and entertain readers of all ages. Publisher of the #1 New York Times bestseller LEGO ® Star Wars: The Visual Dictionary, Do Not Open, and Star Wars: The Clone Wars: The Visual Guide among others, DK also publishes the award-winning Eyewitness series for children and Eyewitness Travel Guides.  BradyGames and Rough Guides are divisions of DK, which is part of Penguin Group.

Wow what a great idea! I’ll definitely have a copy of this as a bookend to all 6 seasons of Lost! Congrats to the creators of Lostpedia and good work!

  • Lego

I don’t think lostpedia has anything to do with this new official encyclopedia. To be honest, I don’t really see why I would pay for this when we have lostpedia.

  • 1Miletogo

Sounds awesome and a must have. But I do hope there is a chapter or 2 about behind the scenes or other things that are not included on LostPedia.

  • rivum

do we know when this comes out?

  • hijinx

It comes out August 2010 and no, it has nothing to do with Lostpedia. It is written by Tara DiLullo Bennett and Paul Terry, who work for Titan and both write for the official LOST magazine.

    • Drew Lancor

Titan? Yike. Considering how badly that company has ruined the once-great Star Wars Insider magazine, which is now just a fluff piece, I hope it’s a different team who has written the book.

      • Funback Joe

How could a Star Wars magazine be anything but a fluff piece at this point

        • Drew Lancor

Star Wars Insider, before Titan took over, had some very well-written articles, short fiction, RPG materials and more. Now, it’s just a typical fan magazine without any substance whatsoever, because most of the great writers from the pre-Titan days left.

  • Casey

Why do I need this when I can type for free and get tons more information AND discussion with fellow fans?

    • GeigerCounter

So I guess the value of printed word is completely unknown around here, huh?

    • Funback Joe

Your point loses a good deal of its weight when you can’t actually type the correct link

      • imfromthepast

LOL, he’ll go to buy the book and leave the store with a rabid armadillo instead.

  • Paul

Much hinges on whether this is simply a reference guide to the show, or whether there’s more. If it just catalogs what we see in the show, then yes, Lostpedia will mostly do the job. But think of Rowling’s anticipated Harry Potter encyclopedia, which is reputed to have content from drafts and from the author’s head that never made it into the series, further fleshing out the Potter world.

With the acknowledgment by Cuse and Lindeloff that they won’t be answering every question in the show (as if that would be possible, anyway), maybe this will give us some info that never made its way to the screen. DHARMA food drops? Libby’s institutionalization? This could actually be a great chance to answer our lingering questions, fill in some gaps, and share content they developed but never got to show. Sure, paraphrases of the new content may slowly work their way onto Lostpedia, but I think I’d be glad to financially support new disclosures with an eye to tying things up.

But if it’s just a straightforward reference guide to what we’ve seen on TV, I’m not all that interested. If I want to be reminded of something after the fact — why, that’s why I’ve been buying the DVDs.

    • fangtastic

That’s a really good point, Paul. I’d very much love to see this encyclopedia answer some of the lingering minute questions that fans may have.

For instance, while it’s not vital to the show, I always wanted to know what was up with the glass eye they found in the Arrow hatch.

While I have no doubt I’ll finish the series feeling satisfied, just to have some closure on tiny things like that would add a new level of appreciation for the hard work put into the show.

      • The Magician

Surely the glass eye belonged to Mikhail?

  • meems

    I’m getting it anyway!

  • Gregory Kincannon

    yea pleasurable info

This is the most harmful thing that you can do to your body. Your body needs lots of minerals and vitamins to function properly. Suddenly, you go on a starvation diet supposedly well calculated to lose weight.

  • Tara Bennett

I’ll be talking about the book for the first time to the media on Fictional Frontiers with Sohaib LIVE on Monday 3/15 at 5:00 pm (EST):

You can email them questions ahead of time. I’ll be on Live for about 15 minutes but we are recording a longer podcast piece that will be up around 6pm the same day.

I was just looking for this info for a while. After six hours of continuous Googleing, at last I got it in your site. I wonder what’s the lack of Google strategy that don’t rank this kind of informative sites in top of the list. Generally the top sites are full of garbage.
