danielle face.jpgIn the two new sneak peeks for The Constant, I noticed a few things:

  • Daniel reports that failure to follow the prescribed bearing results in 'side effects.'
  • Desmond is looking completely confused and disoriented, suggesting an unmooring of sorts in either his memory or his sense of place and time
  • The two new guys on the freighter put Desmond in a sickbay (check the sign on the inside of the door) while the doctor is fetched
  • Minkowski is also confined to the sickbay (is he as disoriented as Des?)
  • We know from previous episodes that our previously introduced Freighter Folk don't entirely trust Minkowski
  • We also have had hints that Daniel Faraday may have some memory and emotional issues
All this sick talk reminded me of The Sickness  to which Danielle referred in Season One.  She told our Losties that  the people with whom she arrived on the Island became terribly ill and she was forced to kill them.  Many of us assumed she meant some type of physical illness.

But what if she thought that they had simply all gone crazy?

If her coworkers were suffering memory impairments and became unhinged from space and time, they'd certainly appear to be scary and unreliable. Perhaps even dangerous to her and her baby.

If Danielle's team came in on an unfortunate bearing, perhaps they, too, suffered 'side effects', and these are The Sickness in Danielle's parlance.

If this turns out to  be the explanation for The Sickness,  it begs the question of how many of our Losties will be afflicted as part of the rescue attempts.  Perhaps  the 2 people that Jack perjured himself  about in Kate's trial made it off the Island but were so completely unhinged that they were killed, died, or are confined somewhere.

Looking forward to your thoughts!!

It's a strong possibility. Very strong. We're seeing a lot of connectios back to season one, so I would not be surprised in the least if you hit it on the money. Only one slight problem...when did Minkowski get to the island and why is the the only freightie being affected?

MerlboroMan said:

Second thought...what made Desomond "sick" was the hatch explosion, not leaving the island, so we're kind of expecting more of that from Desmond, assuming Charlie was directly linked to Desmond's visions because he escaped the hatch. So the question is, what is causing Minkowski's disorientation and why aren't Sayid or Lapidu affected?

Minkowski is still on the freighter. ;)

It seems as though some people might have a sort of natural resistance to these effects, as not all the Freighties who have hit the island seem to be affected.

There are holes and questions--it's just my initial impression watching the sneek peaks.

Doc, you might have just nailed it. I was thinking last night while I was rewatching Raised By Another, that we are probably going to begin seeing an avalanche of tie-backs to hanging mystries from previous seasons. And I think, as we get more and more bits of information, we'll be able to link more and more pieces to the puzzle. As sections begin to connect, I think we'll have increasingly good odds of correctly speculating ahead.

Sorry, KeepingAwake, YOU might have just nailed it.

Good work on the theory. Recently, I re-watched part of season one and was wondering if the sickness would be revisited. I'm also wondering about the injections that Des took while in the hatch. I hope, going forward, that the sickness is one of the many mysteries to be given an explanation. I'm looking forward to the rest of the season, but I dread the long, long wait until 2009 and season five! I wish they would do a special three hour movie this fall with the three 'left over' episodes from this season.

I'm sorry, i forgot , who is Minkowski?

minkowski is on the frieghter no? think this is dead on the money, and isnt it cool that this season is acyually giving us answers!!! question, did i read somewhere that there is now a 6 week break then more of season 4? i hope i didnt imagine that!

Lili-

Minkowski is the guy on the freighter who was initially answering the phone, and he's the guy strapped to the bed in the sickbay on the freighter

Oh ok, gotcha, thank you guys!!! :)

So maybe I'm late to the dance on this one, but how do you know that guy is Minkowski?

KeepingAwake Author Profile Page said:

The Mantis, there have been numerous press releases about Fisher Stevens playing the role of Minkowski. If you've ever seen (or even heard) him before, he is easily recognizable.

Could Minkowski have been the pilot that dropped Naomi onto the island and was rescued from the water after his helicopter crashed?

Phil said:

Um, one question... without having re-watched all the previous seasons, I could have sworn (probably incorrectly) that the guy who Desmond went to meet in the hatch had a partner who took off called Minkowski. Desmond crashed on the Island, the original guy in the hatch found him and told him about what he was doing there. He said his "old partner" (whom I beelived this whole time to be this Minkowski guy) took off or something. I can't quite rememmber the details. Am I way off here?

The partner in the hatch was radzinski

KeepingAwake said:

Phil,

Kelvin Inman found Desmond. Inman's prior partner was Radzinski, who shot himself in the Hatch. (At least I think he did--if he didn't it was strongly implied. At one point Inman tells Des that the blood stain on the ceiling of the hatch is Radzinski.)

Desomond is one of the most interesting characters, and hes still shrouded in mystery. Gonna be a great episode. Why was he wearing a Dharma t shirt way back when Jack first met him in the stadium.....?
Watch out for the birds.

lmz27 said:

WHAT?!!! Desmond's wearing a DHARMA SHIRT in the FLASHBACK???????????????????

I gotta go check this potentially startling clue out right now.....
Did no one ever notice this before!?!! This could be a huge clue....

lmz said:

nah, it's not dharma.... oh well.

SithLord said:

Whoops.
I thought my source was strong on that one.
I guess you cant trust anyone on this island.
