300px-Title_page_of_Le_Chancellor.jpgFinally some Jules Verne! This is one of his finest and most creative (as far as narrative structure) literary pieces.  And I thought it was fairly odd that Regina was holding it...until she committed suicide of course.  If you've read the book, you know it's all about the final voyage of a ship called "Chancellor."  Along the way, there are many horrific events that take place, including an onboard fire and the ship itself sinking.  Many of the crew and passengers begin to get sick while others begin to go crazy.  Some commit suicide while others die from various catastrophes.  So...

Is this book leading us to believe that the freighter is doomed to the bottom of the sea?

Is it simply a clever nod to the fact that people are going crazy and getting sick on the freighter (some even committing suicide)?

Or is there something else here?

I think a better question would be: is this what happened to Danielle's people? They got sick and either all died or committed suicide?
