Anybody else think that the cute
little hound dog behind the cage in the final scene of "The Economist" looked
strangely like a puppy version of the dog in the painting on the wall in
Jacob's cabin. I did, and that's what
fuels my madcap theory of the week: Dogs are the key to Lost.
I know it sounds funny, and in
many ways it's meant to, but I find some strange links between some of our
strangest Lost characters: Ben, Jacob and Walt. They all seem to have a liking to man's best
friend.
I'll ask you to remember certain
things in Lost's past in order to grasp the full magnitude of my theory. They are: Christian Shepherd asking Vincent
to wake up Jack, Walt's undying love for Vincent, the painting in Jacob's
cabin, the dogs at the end of "The Economist," and the Retrievers of Truth
(from the Lost Experience). Let's take
it a character at a time:
Jacob: The only painting on his wall is of a dog. We cannot forget this fact. He has either a strong love for them or
fascination with them, either way, he very much likes the K-9 variety. And, if we believe that the Christian Shepherd
manifestation in the final missing piece "So it begins" is actually Jacob, don't we find it strange that he appears to Vincent first.
I don't, Jacob knows he can
trust a dog. In Hebrew, the name for dog
is Caleb, which means loyal. Jacob
knows that dogs are loyal, and thus that he can trust Vincent
above all others on the island.
Walt: Walt and Vincent
were inseparable up until Walt went
onto the raft. I believe that Vincent wanted to stay and commune with Jacob. Don't
laugh, I know it sounds way out there, but if he appeared to Vincent and had him wake up Jack,
then I'll bet Jacob's having him do
other things as well. The more you spend
time with a dog, the more they attach to you.
I think Vincent is now attached
to Jacob, but I also think this was Walt's inroad to Jacob
as well. Walt
has some abilities that are very much similar to Jacob. He seems to be able to move in and out of
time and space. "He appears where he
should not be." And perhaps the
Retrievers of Truth can tell us more about how Vincent
ties in to this. We'll get to that in a second.
Ben: He may still like
Hamsters more than dogs, but getting to know Jacob
has given Ben a keen liking to the
kind-hearted fluffy friends of man. So
much so that - in the future - he has a whole kennel full of puppies. Are they for experimentation, I'm sure, but Ben knows as well as anyone that Jacob has a fascination with them. Perhaps the future will show us why (or maybe
the Retrievers of Truth can) (We're still getting to that). Ben
was a "special" kid. He seemed to have
some sort of gift. Perhaps the same gift
Walt has. Dog lovers unite.
The Link: Retrievers of Truth...remember the site. It was the ultimate fan service for those of
us who wanted to believe that Vincent
was the key to everything. Well, how
about this. He's at least the key to
bringing together a force to be reckoned with: Walt,
Ben and Jacob. Okay, I'll back up. The site was dedicated to a company that
researched the psychic abilities of Yellow Labrador Retrievers. If Vincent
has this ability, and we know Walt has
a psychic ability, this may explain the strong connection between Walt and Vincent. Perhaps it was Jacob
via Vincent that told Walt to tell John
not to open the hatch. Perhaps it was Vincent via Jacob
who told Ben there was a spinal
surgeon coming to the island. And
perhaps it's Walt via himself telling Ben who's on the ship. So, Walt
may be the man on the boat.
Madcap or plausible? You be the
judge.

I'm still not convinced that Ben is a Vet. Tons of movies, especially gangster type movies always have a guy that can meet them at an unconspicuous place (vet.) to help out with a gunshot wound. I think it was mere coincidence that a dog that looked like the painting was at this particular location.
I hope I'm wrong, but given the hitman nature of the episode, I tend to lean towards what I wrote above.
And don't forget that Cerberus is a mythical 3-headed DOG!
One big mistake here. The Hebrew word for dog is KELEV, not Caleb. It isn't the same at all. It sounds similar, but you have to understand that Hebrew doesn't have vowels, so that the spelling would be the same, but the word itself is very different. Caleb means "bold one".
Again, same spelling in ivrit, different words.
I'm sorry I wasn't completely clear on that, but the Hebrew word for Caleb is Kaleb, which means dog. And many Hebrew scholars believe this to mean bold, loyal and faithful.
Ohhh - I love the idea that Walt is the man on the boat. That would be great!
