If you are not reading Nikki's recaps, you are really missing out! Nikki is the author of the hugely successful Finding Lost series of books that recount in encyclopedic detail each episode of the first three seasons of Lost. You can find the latest here.
She catches the little gems that many of us don't see until we've re-watched repeatedly, like these:
• When Widmore is leaving the auction, the next lot is a series of Dickens books.
• Penny's address and phone number were part of the 815 game
• At the end of the episode, we see Desmond walking away from Penny's townhouse at 423 Cheyne Walk with a smile on his face, as though he has a 'memory' of what is happening in the future.

great recap, of a fantastic episode!! i could go on for hours, but 2 ideas in response to niki's questions: maybe minkowski couldnt answer the phone to penny because they were ordered not to by her dad? as he would know she has been trying to find des. it would make sense for him to be funding the boat, what with widmore's affiliation with dharma?(and penny could have found out) and as has already been said, it would make sense for it to be dharma that is trying to find the island. (esp ben!)
and maybe daniel has a really bad memory anyway, or, maybe he blasted it away during his experiments, but if this is the first time des has been through this loop, then the daniel on the island would have no memory of his visit, as he'd just told him to go! but then later he checks his notes and there is a new note to self! maybe a bit of course correction? i dunno, lots of maybes!!!!!!
At the end of this article, the question about whether or not Desmond has a clean slate and doesn't remember anything from the island is aksed.
After Desmond's first slip back to 1996, he comes back and doesn't know where he is or who Sayid and Frank are.
At the end of the episode, after talking to Penny, and mentioning that he has been on an island, Desmond thanks Sayid, by name, for helping him.
My question (I'm at work so I don't have access to my dvr right now...): Does Sayid tell Desmond his name at any point during the episode? Or has contact with Penny, his constant, helped Desmond recover his 2004 consciousness?
thats my guess b, i dont think sayid told him, or that he heard sayid on deck, and i think that he gradually regained his island memories along the way.
ive got a question too, when the 2 guys are lead ing des to sickbay, i cant make out what the 2nd guy says "as for where we are"..." then he says something about fiji? was it set sail from?
richiek -
Their last port was Fiji. So they know they're somewhere in the Pacific.
Another question: What does Desmond say after the phone call with Penny when Sayid asks, "Are you better now?"
I know he says "Aye", but I can't understand the rest...
Desmond's 2004 consciousness had been displaced by his 1996 consciousness (not sure Des 2004 went off to in the meantime). My interpretation was that the single consciousness trying to straddle two distinct points in time is what leads to a brain aneurism, as the rational mind can't account for coexistence of multiple time periods. Thus, the key for Desmond was to restore his 2004 consciousness via his constant, Penny. Des '96 set a date with Penny, significant enough that he would remember it. Once this appointment is kept, his 2004 consciousness returns (and his 1996 consciousness goes back to where it belongs), thus saving him from the dislocation and the aneurism that would result from it.
• On the calendar where you see the days marked off with X’s, there are no X’s over the dates October 20, 21, 22, or 23. The Boston Red Sox won the American League Championship Series on October 20, and went on from there to win the World Series. Could that have caused some seismic reaction in the world that made four days go missing on the calendar?
There are Xs there if you look at a hi-res screencap they're just crossed out in yellow.
Can I be the first to notice the dog on a leash at Oxford that is the same dog in the painting in Jacob's cabin? I think he's one of the crew member's dogs, I remember reading.
FIRST!
I thought past-Desmond was smiling when he left Penny's apartment because, despite Widmore saying "I'll let her tell you herself" (that she hates him), she actually gave him the number.
"Please, Penny, if you feel anything at all for me, gimme the number."
And she did. True love. Not a "memory of the future."

b, When Sayid asks Des if he is ok now, Des says, "Aye. I'm perfect."
Has anyone noted that Penny's street, Cheyne Walk, is the address of the supernatural sleuth Carnacki, whose investigation s involved natural and supernatural explanations?
