We knew this, BUT... ABC's Stephen Mcpherson is quoted on LSJ.com as stating LOST will get all of the remaining 48 episodes, despite being cut short in season four. Here is the quotage:
"Lost" really will get 48 episodes over a three-season span, as first announced. It had planned to start that with 17 this year, but the strike only gave time for 14. Those extra episodes will be tacked on somewhere in the final two seasons, so the show still has 34 left. One complication: "Lost" rushed some of its stories so it could reach the points it wanted to for the season finale. Now it has a little more room to play.

Oh gawd, that was the problem with the first three seasons for me, those times they chose to "play" by having crap like Hugo and James on a mission to catch tree frogs etc. Of course, a writer's strike could throw all of Mr. McPherson's and TPTB plans out the window.
I think you mean *actor's* strike.
I still don't quite understand how the numbers add up. 17 this year? It was originally supposed to be 16.
It seems like they have left themselves room to add or subtract a couple hours depending on what they end up wanting, by counting a two hour finale as either one or two episodes. Short an episode? "That two hour finale is really two one hour episodes" Need the season to be longer? "That two hour finale is one episode."
They really might as well just tell us that 48 episodes is an approximation and it may be a bit more or a bit less - we're not going to know how many hours of the show remain until it's over.
And I'm fine with them having an hour or two to "play". With 22-24 episodes they ended up with filler, but with 13 it felt like they had to sacrifice some character moments and lighter things. I think a compromise is best, I don't want the show to be too lean, and sometimes the "play" makes for great moments.
