Ben not only had a desk drawer full of money, it was special money: easter egg money. As I foretold on lost.ugo.com, the money here indicates something very interesting with regards to the nature of time on the island, plut it represents yet another 'magentism' reference.
This particular 20 pound note features Michael Faraday. Yep, just like Daniel Faraday:
From Wikipedia: Michael Faraday, FRS (September 22, 1791 - August 25, 1867) was an English chemist and physicist (or natural philosopher, in the terminology of that time) who contributed to the fields of electromagnetism and electrochemistry. From Wikipedia: Michael Faraday, FRS (September 22, 1791 - August 25, 1867) was an English chemist and physicist (or natural philosopher, in the terminology of that time) who contributed to the fields of electromagnetism and electrochemistry.
In addition, this particular note is no longer in circulation. It was only used between 1991 and 2001. Does Ben keep old money around for a reason? Could he be traveling in time as well as in space?

The simple answer would be that it's money he never got to spend since the last time he was off the island. Who knows...
My hunch is that it just reinforces the idea that he's been travelling off-island for some time. That picture we saw last week of him did look very mid-90's.
To be fair, remember Lost takes place in 2004. That money had only been out of print for a few years, and I doubt Ben is taking off-island trips every other weekend if he's supposedly never left. I think it's a little early to start placing him on the Black Rock or what have you.
The money is being fazed out over here but is still about
OMG!!!!!!!DO YOU REALIZE WHAT THIS MEANS????
It's clearly currency from an alternate universe or timeline in which the scientific contributions of Michael Faraday were more significant and important than they are in ours. Significant enough for him to be on freaking currency like Benjamin Franklin!!!! Maybe he invented something really awesome that he didnt in our timeline? This could be some serious steampunk parallel universe shit!!!!!!I think thise opens up the story for a LOT of interesting possibilities. Anybody?
Scratch that last comment. Apparently this is a real note........
to Charlie Lesoine: i love that you jumped straight to steampunk from this! i wish it were true, but i don't see lost going in that direction
I think it's nice that the German money already indicates that Ben is in Germany later. He obviously planned it.
I am from Germany, and this is not just German money - it´s European (except England and Switzerland) money (Currency Euro = €). ;-)
Why could this fact be interesting?
The Euro´s been introduced on January 1st 2002 for the first time in most European Countrys - so either Ben´s "travelled" across Europe around 2002 or it´s been not that long ago. Or maybe he planned to "work" in Europe in the near future.
I also noticed that there is Korean Money in that drawer. That screams Paik connection, because if they didn't want us to think that they would have taken it out of the shot.......
Hmmm... I dont think the money is that relevant and people are reading into it too much. The £20 note was only replaced last year in 2007, and as far as I know the old one is still legal tender, its just banks will only issue new notes eventually all the old ones will go out of curculation. Either way the old note still ties in with the time of the plane crash, if however they had used a new note that was issued last year that would have suggested time travel.
